LG Electronics Develops Korea's First Organic EL for Car Audio

- 3.2-inch with multicolor support…1,000 times faster in response time compared to LCD
- Also developed 1.8-inch for mobile handsets and 0.9-inch for dual folder…Registered 50 patents
- 1.8-inch organic EL will start commercial mass production from this month…to begin with small scale production of 100,000 per month
- Sales for car audios and dual folders to start in full scale from next year in and out of Korea

LG Electronics has developed 3 more types of organic electro luminescence (organic EL) - 3.2-inch for car audios, 1.8-inch for folder type handsets, and 0.9-inch for dual folder handsets. The new organic ELs will soon be available on the market.

The new organic ELs comes with 200 cd/㎡ of brightness, multicolor support and 100:1 contrast. When compared to the conventional LCD, it offers at least twice and at most 10 times better performance level.

To develop the 3 organic ELs, LGE invested over 50 researchers and 10 billion won for the past year and is in the process of registering 50 patents in and out of Korea. LGE was the first in Korea to develop the 4-inch organic EL in 1998 then in 1999, it introduced the 8-inch organic EL. In 2000, it successfully commercialized the 1.4-inch, 1.8-inch (full color), and 2-inch for handset supporting video transmission/ reception capabilities (LGP-7400F) and developed organic EL for IMT-2000. Now by adding the 3 new organic EL products (3.2-inch, 1.8-inch multi color, and 0.9-inch) to its long list of achievements in this area, LGE has confirmed its position as a global leader in organic EL.

In addition, LGE will be able to enjoy the first mover advantage in all ranges of commercial organic EL covering not only those for PDA (3.2-inch, 4-inch, 8-inch) and car navigation, but also those for handsets (0.9-inch, 1.4-inch, two 1.8-inch, and 2-inch) and next generation communication services.

Organic EL which is being dubbed as the next generation display thanks to advantages like: ▲Less power consumption as self-emanating light that requires no back-light; ▲ Response speed that is 1,000 times faster than LCD; and ▲ Light weight/thin size. These and other benefits make organic EL the ideal substitute for LCD in many areas of electronics including IMT-2000 (next generation mobile communication) handsets that require video, data, voice and Internet support, PDA, small TV sets, handheld PC, color screen mobile phone, and handheld PCs.

LGE plans to introduce handsets with the new 1.8-inch organic EL from next year. Organic EL for the 3.2-inch car audio and 0.9-inch dual folder will be put on the market in and out of Korea from next year.
